Your Problems Are Not Real: Why Nothing Is Actually Happening

Herb Fitch on facing crisis from divinity — presented by Mike Spirit Ademola

A friend of Herb Fitch's once faced bankruptcy, and his question was every seeker's question: if I am to walk in a state of divinity, and I am faced with bankruptcy, how do I reconcile the two? What do I do in a state of emergency when I am supposed to be in a state of divinity?

This lesson is Fitch's answer — and it is one of the boldest teachings in the entire Infinite Way.

The Principle: It Is Not Happening

When you are faced with a situation that was not created by God, that is not happening in the one Body, in the one divine Consciousness, in the one divine Life — that situation is not happening. The bankruptcy is not happening. The diagnosis is not happening. Fitch is direct about how hard this is: it is a very difficult thing to look at that which is threatening and know it is not happening. But that is the principle.

Test any condition with these questions. Did God create tumors? Did God create germs, limitation, the evils we countenance in this world? When the answer is a clear no, the next question follows: then how can it be there? And you are alerted to the world-mind hypnosis, which places before you something that God did not place there. What is sustaining it, if it has no divine life? Only the belief that it is there. Nothing else can sustain it.

The Five Principles

1. One Creator — there is no second creator; what God did not create has no cause.

2. One Life — there is no second life; the only life you have is the life of God, never in danger, never in need of repair.

3. One Body — God's infinite body does not divide into many bodies; nothing discordant is happening in the body of God.

4. One Consciousness — the one Consciousness runs its universe perfectly; belief in a second consciousness is the gap the world mind attacks.

5. It is not happening — whatever is not of the one Creator, Life, Body and Consciousness is not happening, and you may be still about it.

Practiced daily — one principle per day, from the morning meditation onward — these five synchronize into a single awareness, and the world of effects loses its power. As Fitch says, soon the gears shift automatically, and the world loses its potency to deceive, to hurt, to pain, and to confuse.

Fear as Your Measuring Stick

"Every time you find yourself fearing, let it be a guide to you that in some way you have lost the awareness that you are the infinite divine life — and you are fearing for that which you are not."

Your divine life cannot fear, because what it would fear would have to exist — and divine life is all. Fear is therefore not a moral failure; it is a compass reading, showing exactly where you have accepted a second life, a second power, a second self.

Rebirth: The Trap Door Out of Death

From here Fitch rises to the teaching's summit: Jesus abolished death by abolishing wrong identification. Before the Christ message, every person's story ended the same way. Jesus opened what Fitch calls a trap door — not physical death, but the death of the mortal sense of self. "You don't die physically, but rather you die to the sense of being a mortal being." That is rebirth: the discovery that the changing self you remember from childhood was never there at all — only the invisible, unchanging divine Self, which is your name, your identity, and your salvation.

"Wrong identity brings the wrong experience. Right identity brings the right experience."

Frequently Asked Questions

Does "it is not happening" mean I should ignore my problems?

No. It is not denial of experience but recognition of cause. The practice is to face the appearance squarely, test it — did God create this? does it contain divine life? — and, finding no divine cause, withdraw the belief that alone sustains it. Fitch reports that what is faced this way "slowly ceases to appear to be happening."

What is the world mind?

The universal human belief-consciousness — what the Bible calls the carnal mind — which broadcasts suggestions of lack, disease and danger that the individual mind picks up and experiences as personal conditions. It has no divine law behind it, and therefore no power except belief.
